Today, after about a year of Kindle Fire announcement, Amazon introduced their new tablet line up. Interested how the flagship model Kindle Fire HD compare to other tablets?

Last year I blogged about Kindle comparison chart to guide users in buying Kindle Fire. I have updated it now so you will see the new Kindle Fire HD comparison charts below.

Kindle Comparison Chart (all variety)

There are 7 new Kindle models announced today. In Kindle Fire HD family, there are 4 — namely the Kindle Fire (2nd gen)Kindle Fire HD 7\”, Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” and Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” 4G LTE Wireless

Kindle Fire (2nd gen) and Kindle Fire HD 7\” will be available starting September 14 while Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” variants will be available only on November 20 so you better pre-order now to reserve your place in line.

If you are not sure what is the best Kindle for you, use the chart below to compare all the latest Kindle models. At the time of this writing the older models, Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G are already unavailable as they are already succeeded by  Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Paperwhite 3G respectively. Amazon touts that the Paperwhite models are the world\’s most advanced e-readers as it offers high-resolution, high contrast, built-in light and 8-week long battery life.

Interesting enough, the good old Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Keyboard 3G are still available and not refreshed or upgraded this time.


Let\’s move forward on the top of the line model Kindle Fire HD and compare it to the premium tablet brands in the market.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” vs. iPad vs. Galaxy Note 10.1 vs. Microsoft Surface


In terms of screen size, Amazon Kindle Fire HD is only 8.9 inches diagonal, which makes it smaller than 0.8 inches compared to Apple iPad\’s 9.7 inches. In fact, Kindle Fire HD is a bit smaller than Apple iPad (3rd gen), Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the upcoming Microsoft Surface.

To think that Kindle Fire HD is only 8.8mm thick, Amazon must have targeted iPad 2 which is also 8.8mm.


When iPad 3rd gen was released its 2048×1536 resolution seemed unnecessary. However, knowing Apple is a trend-setter I have predicted that consumers will look for more personal computing devices with better display. And now, here is the Kindle Fire HD  with 1920×1200 resolution packed in 8.9-inch IPS LCD. Many video enthusiasts should be happy because it has 16:9 screen ratio suitable for widescreen movie playback.

In retrospect, if you think Apple\’s retina display is overrated then how about the latest trend in HD TV? The new wave of digital TVs are already showcasing 4K resolution. Who knows how soon 4k will be the standard screen resolution?



According to Jeff Bezos, \”We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices.\”

Price is one of the best differentiating factor in buying Kindle Fire HD and perhaps this alone can persuade you to buy Kindle Fire HD.  As you can see in the Kindle comparison chart, it shows that the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD starts at $299. That is a whopping $200 difference compared to the 3rd gen iPad. Even with the extra $200 change you can still buy the entry-level Kindle Fire HD 7\” which starts at $199.

Other Features

While Amazon can\’t compete with the number of apps in Apple Apps Store, it compensates for the vast library of movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, books, audiobooks and popular apps that users can buy and consume. There is unlimited cloud storage for all your purchased Amazon content.

It is a little disappointing that Amazon did not even try to put a decent back camera in Kindle Fire HD. This reinforced the notion that all Kindle Fire devices are made for consuming Amazon products and not for producing content. My understanding here is that Amazon wants its consumers to finish reading books or complete watching TV series and audiobooks instead of allowing them to use Instagram to take pictures which doesn\’t add any benefit to Amazon at all. If you get pass this small limitation then everything in Kindle Fire HD is perfect.

Even without a back camera, the front-facing \”HD\” camera can be used for free Skype calls and audiophiles will surely enjoy the Dolby audio virtual surround sound.

Further more, Amazon is introducing Kindle Freetime which allows you to control your kid\’s access to Kindle Fire HD tablet. As a parent you can limit time for reading books, watching videos, using apps, etc.

New users also get one month free access to Amazon Prime for unlimited, instant streaming of thousands of popular movies and TV shows.

iPad Resolution: 7 Good Reasons You are Not Buying or Upgrading to the New iPad

This post is not just about iPad resolution but your own resolution. If you are still weighing your options and you don\’t have a firm decision not to buy the 3rd generation iPad yet, here is a list of reasons why you should really not buy the new iPad.

Of course there are many wonderful features on the 3rd generation iPad but that is not the point. Notice how Apple is marketing the new iPad, it\’s more of the aesthetics that is highlighted not much on the functionality. I will focus on what the new iPad is and what it is not so you\’ll know whether it\’s for you and if you really need to buy it.

1. Retina display is too much

Sure, it is gorgeous but do you need it?

To give you a perspective let\’s use Apple\’s comparison.


With 3145728 pixels packed on a 9.7-inch LED-backlit glossy IPS display, it has 4x pixel density than the older iPad 2. The new iPad resolution is called QXGA  – it still has 4:3 aspect ratio, and it is NOT wide screen. Apple puts \”widescreen\” on the specification but it\’s not wide screen at all.


QXGA is currently the highest non-experimental and non-widescreen resolution — not very common but it will be, soon, due to iPad. The only other company that I know to release a mobile device with QXGA resolution  is NEC which sold laptops with QXGA monitors in the Japanese market.

If you watch non-HD Youtube videos, expect it to appear blocky. Think watching SD television on your HDTV.

If you play mobile HD games, watch HD videos on the go, browse ultra high resolution photographs from DSLR outdoors then perhaps it is worth the upgrade from iPad 2 alone. Otherwise the retina display is probably too much for you.

Also if you do not have the tools to edit or produce great materials from the new iPad, you might as well do those activities on a desktop computer.

2. You\’re not savvy on tablets or not a power user

If you intend to use the new iPad mostly for note-taking, using Facebook, browsing the internet, playing Angry Birds, reading novels or recipe, showing interactive stories to your kid or anything that does not require HD at all, then iPad 2 or any other tablet will serve you for quite a long while.

This boils down to what you really need. If you just need a simple tablet then you are probably better off using Kindle Fire. It\’s cheap and it does what a typical 7\” tablet can do.

3. Looks the same but heavier and thicker!


Disappointing? Yes, to a certain extent.

It might be necessary for the new 11,666 mAh battery inside to support the IPS display power requirement but are you kidding me? This makes iPad 2 more attractive.

Although  every major features were upgraded, the 3rd generation iPad is virtually the same as the older iPad 2 but the new iPad seems to be downgraded because it\’s ticker by 0.6 mm and heavier by 51  g  (Wi-Fi only model).

Get an iPad 2 if you are after the thinnest and lightest iPad available.

4. 4G LTE what?

Maybe having 4G is compelling enough reason to buy the new iPad but are you willing to pay the premium? Take note that you are most likely going to download bigger files from the Apple app store due to increased resolution, and it\’s probably the reason why Apple included 4G LTE on the new iPad anyway.

The new iPad uses either 700 Mhz and 2100 Mhz frequencies for 4G and for some countries that means 4G LTE is not supported at all. Your best hope is that it is compatible with HSPA+ network on your carrier. Apple needs to make separate models to support different 4G frequencies in US alone and it is misleading that 4G is supported worldwide. Again, it\’s not!

The good thing is, Apple still sells Wi-Fi only iPad and you can totally avoid the frequency mess.

If you can get unlimited and unthrottled data plan it might be a great deal but your battery probably won\’t last longer on 4G anyway so you might wish you have bought the Wi-Fi only version or probably something else.

5. You already bought an iPad 2 or other tablet

If you are happy with what you already bought and you don\’t wish to dive  immediately on a new purchase, that\’s totally fine. It is safer to wait and see what other consumers think of the new device after it is used and tested by typical consumers like you and me.

Also, you might wish to get more mileage out your device if it is less than 6 months. Don\’t pity yourself if you are not getting the new iPad soon. You\’re just fine without it.

6. No Siri


I don\’t blame you if you love Siri so much. The new iPad has a dictation feature but it is not as flashy or entertaining as Siri could be. Maybe it is coming to iPad in the feature but if you are dying to see Siri in the new iPad, better luck next time.

7. Need to save money

Let\’s make this quick. If you don\’t have enough money then don\’t buy the new iPad. You can consider iPad 2 because it is cheaper now and the awesomeness to price ratio is still relatively high compared to other tablets.

If you really want to save, why are you even looking at the new iPad?

iPad 2: You’ll buy it no matter what we say

\"iPadRumors after rumors, I got tired reading news about iPad 2 but on March 2, Apple finally made iPad 2 official.

Apple unveiled the iPad 2 without giving much hint on its specs so some tech journalists and tablet enthusiasts were disappointed with yet another Apple feature creep.

The new iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner, runs on A5 dual-core processor, has front and rear camera, and comes in white. Despite the lack of other more-awaited features like better resolution, USB support and 4G, Apple boasts that it is more than just a marginal improvement.

Even though this seems like an iPad 1.5 rather than iPad 2, the few feature bump might be enough to screw the competition up. Even Samsung admitted that Galaxy Tab 10.1 features seems inadequate. Even so, the competition is strong against other tablets like Motorola Xoom.

Apple CEO Steve Job\’s keynote on March 2 event ended with an interesting closing remark, saying that \”These are post-PC devices, that need to be even easier to use than a PC.\” This is an oxymoron because all Apple devices are inherently dependently on iTunes, which requires a PC (or a Mac). Why can\’t they just cut the cord?

As Conan O’Brian have said on his night show, Apple is getting cocky about the iPad 2 so they came up with a mock promo video using this slogan — iPad 2: You’ll buy it no matter what we say.

The Future of Publishing 2.0

\"iPad\"With the rise of Apple iPad’s popularity, the interest in tablets and e-readers were reestablished and it opened the flood gates for publishers to capitalize in this promising market.

Last year we saw Google opened its own ebookstore, joining Apple and Amazon. We also saw different magazines releasing different digital formats to cater for this market segment.

There is still a burning question on when will e-books replace or slowly dominate the good old paper books. The debate has been on-going for many years but until now, printed books are still ahead of e-books in terms of sales.

I support both formats whether printed or digital and many readers do because 85% of users who buys e-books still buys print books. I see the pros and cons for both and I cannot ditch one in favor of the other, yet.

One would argue that iPad publishing failed in converting print readers to e-book readers. I could also argue that Google has not contributed much in this arena. It’s too early. The time is not yet ripe.

That being said, Mashable published 5 E-Book Trends That Will Change the Future of Publishing last December which is consistent with my prediction. The list mentioned enhanced e-books and I totally agree about the expectations of consumers for greater experience. This will drive more consumption of digital media, including e-books.

But will it kill print? We\’ll know when we get there.
