Genius EasyPen F610E – Inexpensive Graphics Tablet

Genius EasyPen F610E

I always wanted to buy a graphics tablet or digitizer. Many moons ago, I love painting and sketching but due to priorities and other growing interests, it seems that it has become a suppressed talent. I also could not justify how much this costs back then. However, over the years it has become less and less expensive to that point that buying a graphic tablet today is more practical than ever to advance your creativity.

Sketch with Precision

I am reviewing EasyPen F610E from Genius and it is probably the most bang-for-the-buck graphics tablet you can get in this price range now.

The first thing that caught my attention is how wide the working area is — 6.25\” x 10\”. It should be more than enough for artists who works on big monitors with 16:9 ratio resolution. As a serious amateur photographer, I find this very practical for post processing workflow.

The device comes with a cordless pen, a pen holder and 8 programmable macro keys on the side that you can use as shortcuts for increased efficiency. It is also very thin and portable as it weighs only 515 grams.

With high sensitivity of 2048 levels pen pressure and fine 4000 LPI resolution it is on par with more expensive brands in the market. You can draw pretty much how you would draw on a traditional canvas or paper with precision using this device. To add even more value Genius EasyPen F610E comes with bundled software. It comes with Corel Painter Essentials 4 which inspires you to draw and sketch like a pro.

Overall Genius EasyPen F610E is a great valuable for this graphic tablet size and price. If you are going to buy your first graphic tablet you probably won\’t regret getting this one.

6.25” x 10” Slim Pen Tablet

The EasyPen F610E, an extra slim graphic tablet from Genius, gives you the creative freedom to draw, sketch and design with precision. This 6.25”x 10” graphic tablet has a wide working area for the most popular monitor sizes.

With a fine 4000 lines per inch (LPI) resolution and a responsive 200 report rates per second (RPS), EasyPen F610E features responsive and precise controls perfect for intricate drawings. The cordless pen which doubles as a mouse is pressure sensitive with 2048 pressure levels, making brush strokes thicker or thinner depending on how hard the stylus is pressed, similar to traditional painting. Offering great value, the EasyPen F610E is comparable to more expensive graphics tablets.

For added productivity and greater tablet experience, the package is bundled with powerful but easy-to-use Corel Painter Essentials 4 making it easy to create, paint and edit photos on both Windows and Mac platforms.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Formally Announced in the USA

Samsung have formally announced and dated their new flagship smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S4, and announced that it will reach American hands on April 30th. It arrives just in time to tempt those who haven\’t yet reached for the HTC One and are waiting it out to see what Samsung pulls out of its magician\’s top hat, as the company has built a reputation for innovation and quality over the years and has released a string of popular handsets.

\"Samsung

Not that other manufacturers haven\’t, of course – but you\’d have to feel a little stressed knowing you were facing off against this beast of a machine. With two gigabytes of RAM, a 5\” screen (a cheeky wink towards the current 4.7\” trend) and full HD on its display, the Galaxy S4 is a serious contender for being branded the best handset of 2013.

The impressing thing about Samsung\’s launch will be its inevitable competition with other handsets as it sets out to demonstrate just what sets the manufacturer apart. Then again, given Samsung manufactures the tech for at least one other major competitor, it\’s worth thinking about the level of capability they possess when it comes to building smartphones, tablets and the like.

The initial reviews are starting to come in, although they\’re no more than first looks, but the initial impression from critics is that they\’re, well, impressed. There\’s a lot to compete with here, bearing in mind that the Galaxy S4  follows on from the SII and S3, both extremely popular high-quality phones in their own right, both of them still happily in use by Samsung fans even now, which is unusual for the smartphone market.

The S4 itself has many noticeable improvements, such as facial recognition technology, an improved camera, and a larger and higher-resolution screen. It also comes with an extremely thin layer of glass over the screen itself, which helps keep the form factor of the device down while allowing you to feel like you\’re interacting with the screen more directly than on handsets with thicker glass.

There are other little innovative touches, too, such as Smart Look, which pauses video when the phone works out you\’re not looking at the screen, Sound and Shot, which records nine seconds of audio with the photo you\’ve just taken (not a unique feature but a nice one nonetheless), and of course the quality of the camera itself whether you\’re recording video or taking snapshots of the world around you. The S4 indeed has quite the formidable feature set, and when it hits the USA at the end of April it will be interesting to see how the competition reacts to such a desirable phone.

It seems like this year is definitely the year of smartphones that are set to push the bar regardless of which manufacturer they\’re from, and as Samsung and HTC step up as rivals to Apple in terms of innovation and quality, it\’ll be exciting to see who comes out on top in the end, especially if it drives these companies to produce more impressive handsets in an attempt to beat one another.

Editor\’s note: Samsung Galaxy S4 will hit the Philippine market this week and local telcos will have their separate launches in the coming weeks, too, so stay tuned for more information.

WD My Net N900 Central Dual-Band HD Router

Western Digital is well-known for their hard drives (HDD). In fact, I\’m using one in my PC now and I have more for back-ups. Apart from hard drives, Western Digital is also known for making WD TV media player. To expand their offerings, Western Digital started selling My Net series routers by mid-2012.

\"Western

If you are  following the hard disk industry, there are only 3 real players in the HDD market now – Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba. The rest of the other players either sold their business to these three or focused on a new market such as solid-state drives (SSD).

As more and more people connect their devices at home, Western Digital supplies network and storage demands for connected homes. Packaging router and storage solution seems to be the ideal offering aimed to enhance consumer experience.

WD My Net Router Comparison

The first 4 models of My Net series have been around since Q3 2012. How do they compare to each other?

The comparison of these Western Digital My Net wi-fi routers can be found at the back of WD My Net router boxes. Take a look and it should be clear how they stack against each other

\"WD

To put it into words My Net N600 and My Net N750 are entry-level dual-band routers meant for people with smaller multimedia and file sharing appetite while My Net N900 is basically the  flagship model My Net N900 Central without the internal storage features.

I\’m going to focus on WD My Net 900 Central in this product overview. After all, it is the flagship model next to AC1300 which supports 802.11ac . The 5th generation Wi-fi (aka 802.11ac) is relatively new so there are few devices that currently support it anyway.

WD My Net N900 Central

Western Digital market their router line-up as HD Dual-Band routers. They put HD on the product name to emphasize that it supports high-definition streaming and it really matches your HD TV. Is it made possible by the dual-band speed of 450 mbps on 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz channel, hence the N900 name.

WD My Net N900 Central ships with 1T or 2T 2.5\” HDD depending on the model. Unfortunately there is no easy way to upgrade the storage that comes with it because it is not meant to be replaceable. If you want to upgrade in the future, you might need to settle for My Net N900 which is essentially the same, only without the hard drive, but can be partnered with NAS to make your own network data storage or personal cloud solution.

What\’s special in the My Net series is the FastTrack technology that automatically prioritizes important network traffic such as HD streaming, video calls, Xbox Live, etc. You don\’t have to turn off other devices just to make sure that you have flawless YouTube playback.

It also supports WD2Go which enable securely access and management to all files stored on My Net N900 Central HD dual-band storage router. It supports Dropbox and SkyDrive as well.

You can find more details of the product on the local press release below.

Despite having strong competition from iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 900, HTC One X and Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S3 still serve to be one of the best gadget ever because of its outstanding features and excellent apps.

Kindle Comparison Chart: Kindle Fire HD vs. Others

\"KindleIt was already expected that Amazon will release a bigger tablet, purportedly called Kindle Fire 2, in order to compete with the bigger tablet iPad. Today, after about a year of Kindle Fire announcement, Amazon introduced their new tablet line up. Interested how the flagship model Kindle Fire HD compare to other tablets?

Last year I blogged about Kindle comparison chart to guide users in buying Kindle Fire. I have updated it now so you will see the new Kindle Fire HD comparison charts below.

Kindle Comparison Chart (all variety)

There are 7 new Kindle models announced today. In Kindle Fire HD family, there are 4 — namely the Kindle Fire (2nd gen)Kindle Fire HD 7\”, Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” and Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” 4G LTE Wireless

Kindle Fire (2nd gen) and Kindle Fire HD 7\” will be available starting September 14 while Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” variants will be available only on November 20 so you better pre-order now to reserve your place in line.

If you are not sure what is the best Kindle for you, use the chart below to compare all the latest Kindle models. At the time of this writing the older models, Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G are already unavailable as they are already succeeded by  Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Paperwhite 3G respectively. Amazon touts that the Paperwhite models are the world\’s most advanced e-readers as it offers high-resolution, high contrast, built-in light and 8-week long battery life.

Interesting enough, the good old Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Keyboard 3G are still available and not refreshed or upgraded this time.

\"Kindle

Let\’s move forward on the top of the line model Kindle Fire HD and compare it to the premium tablet brands in the market.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9\” vs. iPad vs. Galaxy Note 10.1 vs. Microsoft Surface

Dimension

In terms of screen size, Amazon Kindle Fire HD is only 8.9 inches diagonal, which makes it smaller than 0.8 inches compared to Apple iPad\’s 9.7 inches. In fact, Kindle Fire HD is a bit smaller than Apple iPad (3rd gen), Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the upcoming Microsoft Surface.

To think that Kindle Fire HD is only 8.8mm thick, Amazon must have targeted iPad 2 which is also 8.8mm.

Screen

When iPad 3rd gen was released its 2048×1536 resolution seemed unnecessary. However, knowing Apple is a trend-setter I have predicted that consumers will look for more personal computing devices with better display. And now, here is the Kindle Fire HD  with 1920×1200 resolution packed in 8.9-inch IPS LCD. Many video enthusiasts should be happy because it has 16:9 screen ratio suitable for widescreen movie playback.

In retrospect, if you think Apple\’s retina display is overrated then how about the latest trend in HD TV? The new wave of digital TVs are already showcasing 4K resolution. Who knows how soon 4k will be the standard screen resolution?

\"Kindle

Price

According to Jeff Bezos, \”We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices.\”

Price is one of the best differentiating factor in buying Kindle Fire HD and perhaps this alone can persuade you to buy Kindle Fire HD.  As you can see in the Kindle comparison chart, it shows that the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD starts at $299. That is a whopping $200 difference compared to the 3rd gen iPad. Even with the extra $200 change you can still buy the entry-level Kindle Fire HD 7\” which starts at $199.

Other Features

While Amazon can\’t compete with the number of apps in Apple Apps Store, it compensates for the vast library of movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, books, audiobooks and popular apps that users can buy and consume. There is unlimited cloud storage for all your purchased Amazon content.

It is a little disappointing that Amazon did not even try to put a decent back camera in Kindle Fire HD. This reinforced the notion that all Kindle Fire devices are made for consuming Amazon products and not for producing content. My understanding here is that Amazon wants its consumers to finish reading books or complete watching TV series and audiobooks instead of allowing them to use Instagram to take pictures which doesn\’t add any benefit to Amazon at all. If you get pass this small limitation then everything in Kindle Fire HD is perfect.

Even without a back camera, the front-facing \”HD\” camera can be used for free Skype calls and audiophiles will surely enjoy the Dolby audio virtual surround sound.

Further more, Amazon is introducing Kindle Freetime which allows you to control your kid\’s access to Kindle Fire HD tablet. As a parent you can limit time for reading books, watching videos, using apps, etc.

New users also get one month free access to Amazon Prime for unlimited, instant streaming of thousands of popular movies and TV shows.

Last Words

I hope the 2 Kindle comparison charts above helped you compare the current Kindle model line up and other existing tablets.

Do you think Amazon Kindle Fire HD hits all the sweet spots? Is it a true Apple iPad contender?  I am interested how Apple will respond to this. In several days, Apple night announce a new device. Will it include an Apple iPad mini? How about Google? Nexus 7 is not looking good when you put it beside a Kindle Fire HD.

How can you not love Amazon?

Ozaki O!tool Stylus-R Stylus for iPad and Tablets

\"Ozaki

When I saw Ozaki O!tool Stylus-R at first I thought you can assign different colors on your iPad for each stylus because the video ads (as seen below) shows different stylus color for different digital pen color. It is a bit misleading though. It can also do what your finger can do on  a flat surface; only better.

\”Color your rainbow with refills\” is a little vague as a marketing slogan but It could only mean you can replace the tip of the stylus and you can choose different colors from different body colors available. It\’s really just a stylus that comes in different colors and you can color your rainbow with matching colored stylus tip. I\’m not sure what inspired \”color your rainbow\” thing because the choice of stylus colors are not ROYGBIV colors at all from the website.  It comes in pink, purple, sky blue,  brown, yellow-green, white and black. However, the other images from the marketing materials that I got tells me otherwise so maybe there are more colors available. You can also buy 10  colorful tip refill in different rainbow colors instead of the standard black stylus tip.

What you will get in Ozaki O!tool Stylus-R are 2 extra replaceable stylus tips so it\’s like buying 3 stylus in one package. You can even buy refills if you need more replacements. You will get 1 stylus body with triangular prism body shape for easy grip. It\’s great for children learning to write.

This is a great stylus and one of the very few stylus that offers tip replacement. Instead of buying a new stylus when the tip is worn out, you just buy a new refill.  Refer to the press release below for more information about the availability in the local market.

O!tool Stylus-R, Colors Your Rainbow with Refills

Enjoy drawing on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch with Ozaki’s O!tool Stylus-R. The new replaceable tips design will help you create your idea and splash colors into your life.

Having a hard time to control your conventional stylus? OZAKI understands your concerns, and that is why they designed the O!tool Stylus-R with a triangular prism shape. Its unique design can help you manipulate the stylus more easily, drawing ideas as you want. Worrying about kids who like to damage stylus while drawing? Don’t fret as it has a durable replaceable refill tips to extend the life of the stylus and provide an excellent experience for drawing and writing.

According to research, traditional stylus users usually purchase a whole new stylus within half year because of the fast degradation of the stylus’ tip. Although the other parts of the stylus are still new, users still have to throw their stylus away. That is why Ozaki, a company with a mission to create products that have the least amount of impact on the environment, came up with O!tool Stylus-R and refills package. Now, users only need to change the tip, and then they can have a brand-new-like stylus gliding extremely smoothly on their iOS devices.

Unlike other conventional styluses, O!tool Stylus-R comes with 10-color matches just like your crayon, so that you can color your rainbow with the beautiful color matches. Furthermore, you can purchase additional refill tips package in your favorite colors. With O!tool Stylus-R, you will find that drawing and writing could be so enjoyable.

Features:

  • Comfortable and durable
  • Smoother and more accurate tip
  • Up to 10-color choices
  • Buy 1 get 3 replaceable tips
  • Triangular prism shape design for easy and full control
  • Lightweight

OZAKI O!tool Stylus-R retails at Php 995. Ozaki is distributed in the Philippines by MSI-ECS. For more inquiries, please contact [email protected] or +63-2688-3181.
