Mozilla\’s next-generation JavaScript engine, JägerMonkey, makes Firefox a top contender on the fastest browser on the planet again. Well, that is still contestable until the final version of Firefox 4 arrives but this is still good news for Firefox supporters. The page-rendering is 5x better than Firefox 3.6.x on V8 Benchmark. This alone is noteworthy because Mozilla is playing catch-up with the speed of Google Chrome.

The latest beta also included hardware acceleration. Firefox call this technology WebGL and it is the first of its kind. GPU plays a vital role on computing nowadays because more and more applications are harnessing the power of graphics card to make applications run faster. An OpenGL-capable or DirectX compatible graphics card is required. Linux support is coming in future beta.

OpenType font is now added. It supports ligatures, kerning and font variants which are very important for fancy and highly technical font that we only get to see on desktop or print. HTML5 Forms API is also added. It makes web based forms easier to implement and validate. Panorama is changed a bit and I also noticed some cosmetic changes like the swirling indicator when Firefox is loading page.

Take note that Firefox 4 is still in beta and it is slated to be released next year, January 2011.
