Skype to 56k Dial up

This would look lame to veteran users of Skype who have explored its features since beta. Since I use Skype primarily for SkypeOut I didn’t have any chance to experiment with it. Behold (pun intended), this afternoon I called a friend who uses 56k modem and I was surprised with the audio quality. Even though the codec runs at 128kbps, the sound is still acceptable with few tolerable delays throughout the conversation.

On my friend’s end, my voice sounded funny because of distortion mostly at the end of sentences or before pauses. The sound would sound choppy from time to time but is still bearable. This is most probably due to restricted bandwidth on his dialup connection.

I haven’t tried PC-to-PC calls via 56k modem. Perhaps I’ll try that to see how Skype sounds like in 56k-to-56k dial up connection. :P
